Five square
meter landyachts were created in the 1980s in Europe in response to the
rising cost of competitive land yachts. Although the competition
was creating big, beautiful, hi-tech yachts, it was also creating yachts
that were too complicated and too expensive for all but the wealthiest
sailors.
Out of this dilemma
grew one of the most popular sailing classes ever, the international class5.
The class's originators wanted a fast, exciting yacht, that was constructed
from common materials and that could be easily transported in or on a small
car. The rules restricted some aspects of design to control costs,
but left others open to keep the tinkerers happy.
Since Americans already
had a class 5, US landsailors created the 5 square meter class using the
same specifications as the international class5. Out of this class
grew the US Fed 5, an evolution of a British design which is raced both
as a one design class and in the 5 square meter class.
